Can God Create a Rock so Big that even He Cannot Move it?

This question is designed to bring God's omnipotence into question, for if one answers yes, than God's omnipotence can not be so rightly called, for He would be incapable of moving the rock; however, if one answers no then God is incapable of creating something, and this would lead some to believe that this invalidates God's omnipotence.  This is the trap that many athiests and agnostics will try to catch a Christian with.  Here is my response to this question:

The answer is no, for the finite can never overpower or exhaust the power of the infinite.  A rock is constrained by time and space: it is made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons which in turn make up minerals which in turn make up the rock.  All atoms, minerals, and rocks take up space, which is another way of saying that they are limited by space and time.  A rock can never grow to overpower the space that limits it, and the culmination of space--the universe, is finite and the finite can never overpower or exhaust the power of an infinite being.  Of course if the rock consumed the universe it would have no space to move into therefore becoming an immovable object, but we will not insult or critics--they are not seeking such a simple and obviously evasive question.

They are trying to point out that the concept of omnipotence is paradoxal--and even contradictory.  It is true that if omnipotence were not controlled by another attribute of God that it would ultimately destroy itself, but God's power is limited by His perfect will.  His power can still be rightly called omnipotent because the will of the beholder is not a measure of potency--merely because God will use His power as He wills does not mean His power is insufficient.  God will never create an infinite immovable object because it would be contrary to His will, which is to maximize His glory by making manifest His infinite perfections.   God will never, because He is perfect, act in a manner that is contrary to His will or intentions, and because His will and intention is to maximize His glory, He will do so perfectly and will never use His power in such a manner as to impugn His glory, or which creating an infinite immovable object is an example.

I hope this has helped some of you out; you may or may not have heard this argument--it is tricky but stand your ground with humility and respect.

Cordially in Him,
Tommy Race

Book Review

"Binding of the Blade"

About 2005, I discovered a fantasy series known as “Binding of the Blade” by a Christian teacher named L.B. Graham. Over the past three years, he has released the third, fourth, and, more recently, the fifth books. Graham’s books are most certainly as Christian as they are advertised to be. There is a sense of Christian morals, of Christian hope, and of the dependence that we have upon our Savior as we go through our everyday lives. The series is centered around an event that happened several centuries earlier: when the Satan character tempted a man to fall, and he did fall, bringing down the rest of the human race down with him. Despite this grave failure, there is hope. Allfather, the lord and creator of the fantasy world, promised that one day a boy would come and that his sacrifice would reverse what happened centuries ago. The series focuses on the fulfillment of that promise, which is gradually fulfilled and completed in an excellent ending in the fifth book All My Holy Mountain. The series has several Christian allegories, plenty of big battles, a couple of romances, and lots of travels, discussions, and the like. There are memorable characters like the faithful tiger Koshti, the sharp-tongued Mindarin, and the blind prophet Valzaan. I highly recommend the series to Christian teens as it is an easy read and is deeper in content than most literature today. And, you readers will be lucky because you don’t have to wait a whole year for the next book. =)

Is Theology for Everyone?

Dear Reader,

It seems to be a popular trend to avoid Systematic Theology, that is a formal organization of doctrines, and either allow Pastors and Professors to study it, or to throw it out altogether.  It is a tragedy of our time, for everyone is a theologian, and though they may not be theologians vocationally, they do hold a theology on which they base their beliefs and actions.  C.S. Lewis, in his book Mere Christianity, points out that all people are theologians; however, many hold on to old and outdated beliefs that have been tried and refuted by professional theologians in years past.   He also notes that most of the new trends, post-modernism and new-agism especially, are repackaged versions of old ideas.  So if one does not guard and nurture their theology, it will affect every aspect of one's life; one cannot separate your theology and one's actions.   If one has a flawed theology, than his life will feel the repercussions.

There is another reason that studying peer-reviewed Systematic Theology is also beneficial; it makes one challenge and defend the views one already holds, and the studier is forced to think critically about their theology, and when one finishes their study, one is likely to have a clearer idea of God.  As a Christian, I want the clearest view of God I can possibly attain.  God is already immensely above me in every respect, and I want to know him more clearly.

However, Systematic Theology is not and cannot be the only method of knowing God.  In fact, if one studies Systematic Theology and does not have a relationship with God, the studier's efforts would have been wasted.  God cannot be known from theology alone, just as I do not know Abraham Lincoln from studying him.   C.S. Lewis likens a personal encounter with God with a walk on the beach--you experience God or the Atlantic Ocean and are overwhelmed; however, you cannot get anywhere on the Atlantic Ocean without a map, a less real representation of the Atlantic that is culmination of all the real experience navigators have had on the Atlantic Ocean.  Certainly the map is not as exciting as a real experience, but it is very much as useful.  The bible is not practical theology alone, it contains many doctrines which have been copied and pasted into Systematic Theologies.  If God had inspired his authors of the Bible to include aspects of Systematic Theology and Practical Theology, shouldn't Christians study both?

However, I realize that most people find lengthier Systematic Theologies difficult to read, so I would like to recommend, free of charge, a couple brief Systematic Theologies:

Berkhof, Louis.  Summary of Christian Doctrine.  Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1978.
------------------ Manual of Christian Doctrine. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1933.
(The Summary is shorter and the Manual is more in depth)

Packer, J.I. Concise Theology. Carol Springs: Tyndale House Publishers, 1993.

Sproul, R.C. The Essential Truths of the Christian Faith.  Wheaton: Tyndale House Publishers, 1992

I sincerely hope that you pick up one of  these theologies and begin studying.  Best of Luck.

The Big Movie Review: IRON MAN

Hello, this is Clocks. This is my very first review. QUITE a special moment. I am reviewing your movies for now on, joyfully, hehe. Of course, joyfully! ..After all it IS the Joyful Sound, is it not? ANYHOW, dolls, I can't exactly say too much about myself in this post, other than I am VERY analytical of movies. I don't like just anything, believe me. I stick it where the sun just don't shine if nessecary. But, overall, if you want to know about ME go to my PROFILE.. now off to whats important, the movie! Today I'll be reviewing "Iron Man". Exciting, right? Everyone's gotta just love a good sweaty multi-millionare iron giant fighting off terrorists in the desert, I know. Whoo! That's a mouth full. Off we go..

Entering the movie, after hours of my brother telling me the cameos of Stan Lee and upcoming spins offs of the movie, well, frankly I wasn't exactly pumped. In fact, I was just intending to pass the time. However, I was in for an awakening.. The beginning is actually, how can I put this, cool. Which is not how I intended it to be, which starts with a c and ends with a y. Uh huh. The worst of em' all. Although, again, in for a startling awakening. One big thing with me is I, personally, hate deserts. That sounds very naive but really, they put me in a terrible mood. However, oddly enough, the surroundings of the movie seemed to fit perfectly with the whole scheme of things. The music, also fit incredibly well. Robert Downey Jr. was smooth and cunningly attractive to add upon this combo. Mrs. Paltrow also wasn't too bad. She actually touched me and seemed truly sweet and had a certain, "twinkle" in her eye. Which, doesn't usually rub off on me as true from the standard Hollywood actresses. I'm sure the next thing you are pondering of is all the, "high pack action". Yes, the rumors are true. There is a LOT of action. Thankfully, just not the kind that makes you check your watch every ten minutes, but instead, leaves you on the edge of your seats, sweating.. as if you were Iron Man yourself.. yeah, yeah.. I got a little TOO into it, I admit. With the jaw hanging and all that good movie-going junk. ANYHOW. Long story short.. you get your money's worth and a good two hours of pumped up entertainment. My analyzation is: THREE STARS.

The Joyful Sound: Revived?

Dear readers of The Joyful Sound,

For the past year, I shut down The Joyful Sound because of my hectic college schedule.  But part of me wants to continue this venue to minster to teens and college students.  There is only one problem, I cannot write all of the articles I was able to write prior to my college agenda.  I know many of you miss The Joyful Sound.  Would anyone like to help out and write reviews, poems, and other pieces of interest?  If interested, e-mail me @ blair.joyfulsound@yahoo.com.

Your help would mean a lot to me!

Thank you,
Blair Sanders

2007 Dove Nominations!
The 2007 Dove Award nominations are here! There are some surprises, and some nominations that were predicted. Here's what I have to say about these nominations!

Song of the Year:
Bless The Broken Road (made popular by Selah)
Cry Out To Jesus (Third Day)
Drifter (DecembeRadio)
God's Still Good (Young Harmony)
Imagine Me (Kirk Franklin)
Made To Worship (Chris Tomlin)
Me & Jesus (Stellar Kart)
My Savior My God (Aaron Shust)
Nothing Left To Lose (Mat Kearney)
Praise You In This Storm (Casting Crowns)
J.B.'s Predictions: 4/10
Probable Winner: "My Savior My God"
Missing: "Everything You Ever Wanted"
J.B.'s Personal Pick: "Me & Jesus"
Surprise Nominee(s): About half of the nominations
J.B.'s Commentary: Wow! I am surprised with these nominations. I mean, Stellar Kart? DecembeRadio? Kirk Franklin? Those nominations caught me totally by surprise. However, not all of nominations shocked me. "My Savior My God", "Made To Worship", "Cry Out To Jesus", and "Praise You In The Storm", were nominated. These are the real contenders for the prize. I personally think it will be a battle between Chris Tomlin's "Made To Worship" and Aaron Shust's breakout hit "My Savior My God", with Aaron Shust taking home the award. I'm rooting for Stellar Kart's "Me & Jesus", but it will be a long shot.

Female Vocalist of the Year:
Christy Nockles
Krystal Meyers
Natalie Grant
Nichole Nordeman
Rebecca St. James
J.B.'s Predictions: 3/5
Probable Winner: Natalie Grant
Missing: Carrie Underwood
J.B.'s Personal Pick: Krystal Meyers
Surprise Nominee(s): Christy Nockles
J.B.'s Commentary: The past few years have been disastrous for female singers. You are lucky to find one on 20 The Countdown Magazine. Because of this, the Female Vocalist category is pretty limited. Yes, the list has big names like Natalie Grant and Nichole Nordeman, but also has Christy Nockles, the lead singer of Watermark. I'm not saying she's not a fantastic vocalist, however, I am just surprised because Watermark is no more. I think Carrie Underwood should have been nominated because of her popularity in the Christian market. I would like to see Krystal Meyers win. I think of all the nominees, she has had the best year in the music scene. In 2006, Krystal has released her sophomore CD, Dying For A Heart, spun radio hits, and has appeared in NBC promotions. I think she deserves the Dove award.

Male Vocalist of the Year:
Aaron Shust
Chris Tomlin
Jeremy Camp
Mark Hall
Mat Kearney
J.B.'s Predictions: 4/5
Probable Winner: Chris Tomlin
Missing: David Crowder
J.B.'s Personal Pick: Aaron Shust
Surprise Nominee(s): none
J.B.'s Commentary: This is going to be a heated competition. These are the biggest names in Christian music. However, no matter how hard the battle, Chris Tomlin will most likely be our winner. He won last year, which may give him an advantage.

Group of the Year:
BarlowGirl
Casting Crowns
David Crowder Band
Jars of Clay
MercyMe
J.B.'s Predictions: 3/5
Probable Winner: Casting Crowns
Missing: Third Day, Switchfoot, Sanctus Real, Hawk Nelson
J.B.'s Personal Pick: BarlowGirl
Surprise Nominee(s): none
J.B.'s Commentary: What? No Switchfoot? What is this world coming to? Oh well, back to business. Casting Crowns is the probable winner because of "Praise You In This Storm". If Third Day or Switchfoot were nominated, this catagory would be tougher to predict. However, since this is not the case, Casting Crowns is going to be a shoo-in. I was really hoping that the success that Sanctus Real and Hawk Nelson garnered throughout 2006 would give at least one of them a nod in the "Group of the Year" catagory.

New Artist of the Year:
Aaron Shust
Ayiesha Woods
DecembeRadio
Leeland
Pocket Full of Rocks
J.B.'s Predictions 3/5
Probable Winner: Aaron Shust
Missing: Family Force 5, Brian Littrell
J.B.'s Personal Pick: Ayiesha Woods
Surprise Nominee(s): Pocket Full of Rocks
J.B.'s Commentary: After an incredible year of radio success and multible nominations in other catagories, Aaron Shust is a likely candidate for this award. I am surprised to see the omission of Brian Littrell and Family Force 5. These artists had a great year with great popularity. Pocket Full of Rocks shocked me with their nomination. They haven't been radio studs like Aaron Shust or Brian Littrell, so how was I to know they would be nominated.

Movie Review: Cars

Movie Review:
Cars
Written By Joanna D.

I will now shock and astound you by my view of Cars. I liked it; the movie was good.Cars is a movie about caring about others. Yes, it does sound cutesy said that way, but take my word: it is ok.First of all for any movie is the trailer. It looked like it was dumb and full of stupid (perhaps off-color) jokes. (The anthromorphic faces on the cars do not help.) The clips I saw of it while babysitting, before I actually saw it, also looked dumb. The music was ok perhaps a little too busy; it should have been softer in a certain scene while people...-cars talked. The plot: a spoiled brat of a racing star gets dropped into a town in the middle of nowhere where he isn't made much of and is actually looked down upon because he messed up a street. (he cannot leave until he fixes it.) While there, he discovers a retired racer who choses not to be in the center of attention. When he finally gets back to civilization he runs in a big race, and shows by his actions that he has learned something about not being a spoiled brat. It was a good plot with a good ending.A sign of a good movie is whether they have something funny happen/written in/after the credits. This one did and it was a well done addition.

CD Review: Go

CD Review:
Go Newsboys
By Blair Sanders

After performing praise and worship songs for the past few years, The Newsboys have returned to their rockin' roots with their CD, Go. Go brings back the traditional Newsboys pop/rock sound that Newsboys fans have been missing. The single, "Wherever We Go", kicks off the disc. "Go (I Wanna Send You)" follows. Both of these songs are upbeat declarations of the Newsboys' passion for mission work. Their newest radio single, "Something Beautiful", has a techno/pop flavor to it. This song sounds like it came from the late nineties, but still has likability. The disc continues with the Adult Contemporary songs "The Mission" and "Let It All Come Out". The Newsboys did not let the fans of their worship music down. With songs like "In Wonder" and "I Am Free", they create music that praises God for everything in life. "Your Love Is Better Than Life" has frontman Peter Furler rapping the verses to an upbeat pop song. "Secret Kingdom" is candy for classic Newsboys fans. It showcases the band's ability to keep the fan smiling. The closer, "Gonna Be Alright", seems to take us back to the 60s & 70s. That may be because of the clips of Evie Tournquist's song, "Oh How He Loves You And Me" floating around in the song. Overall, Go goes well. It is a solid effort from Furler and Co.

Roseville: The Employee

Roseville
"The Employee"

It was a brisk, cold February afternoon. JB was hunting for a good job so she could earn some extra money. She had high hopes to buy a new stereo. However, the stereo of JB's choice would cost her 500 dollars. An amount that was about 490 dollars above her budget. JB searched and searched for a job, but an opening was not to be found.
She met up with Olivia at Roseville's finest ice cream parlor. JB was in despair. "Don't worry, you'll find something soon enough," said Olivia in her usual sweet tone. JB looked at Olivia straight in the face and exclaimed, "I have been searching for the past two weeks! No one wants to hire me!". As JB finished her ranting, Rachel came storming in the ice cream parlor. "JB! I was hoping you were here!" Rachel said with much excitement. "Roy's Music 'N More is hiring!" JB was ecstatic. Roy's Music 'N More was Roseville's primary music/movie/video game store, a popular place for teens. Also, this happened to be where Rachel worked, so JB would have someone she knew working with her. "What positions are available?" asked JB. Rachel replied, "The music department." JB was in luck. Music was her specialty. However, Roy's Music had every type of music invented, where JB knew only Christian music. But that wasn't going to stop JB. She needed this job. She really wanted to earn her stereo.
In the next week, JB applied for the position and was accepted. She was to work in the music department to sell CDs. Because of Roy's eclectic music selection, JB needed to research many styles of music and the performers. She wanted to make sure she did her job right. As JB learned more about the music she would be selling, she was disappointed in the quality of the message of the songs. By the time she started to work, however, JB knew enough about both secular and Christian music to find positive comparisons. She figured out how to help customers find music that was similar to what was popular, but had a uplifting impact.
Rachel was happy for her friend and was there to help whenever needed. While JB worked in the music section, Rachel was employed in the movie department. She had worked at Roy's for nearly a year and knew the ropes. During JB's first few weeks, Rachel was there mentoring her. With every day that passed, JB got better and better at her job. She enjoyed her work.
JB was doing so well that she was offered a higher position among the department. JB was thrilled. However, Rachel did not get a promotion. When she learned JB's news, she was upset. "I have been working there longer than a year. I have paid my dues," said a frusterated Rachel. "I am the one that deserves the position." Olivia, who was comforting Rachel, replied, "It's ok". Rachel was slightly annoyed with Olivia's response. "What do you mean, 'It's ok'? It isn't fair!" exclaimed Rachel. Olivia calmly answered, "God has a plan for JB, and maybe her job is for the better. Maybe with JB being a higher authority, she will influence those she serves".
The following day, Rachel contemplated Olivia's words as she left for Roy's. She still felt envy as she walked into the store. Rachel was getting ready to start her shift, but noticed JB helping a teenage girl on the search for good music. Rachel was close enough to hear JB's sales pitch. "What do you know of the band, Loud Slumber?" asked the teen. JB replied, "I've heard the band and all I can say is that they are a violent band full of negativity. They have a good sound, but I don't think it is worth listening the hopeless stories the band sings about." The girl looked perplexed. "But this is what's popular. All of my friends listen to this band!". JB could see where she was coming from. "I understand you, however, I know some bands who have a hopeful meaning to their songs," said JB. The girl appeared intrigued. "Could you show me some CDs of these bands?" asked the young customer. JB was happy to ablige. JB handed the teenager some the latest albums that had a similar sound to Loud Slumber, but had positive lyrics. The girl listened to a demo, then bought the CDs. "Wow!" she said. "I've never heard anything like this. The stuff I listened to before was violent, but this is hopeful and inspiring!".
JB was smiling as the girl left the store. Rachel, who had been watching the entire scene, was touched. This is why JB deserved the job. JB not only has a knack for selling music, but has the ability to lead kids to healthy music. After realizing her error, Rachel prayed a prayer of repentance. She had truly learned about how God places everyone in the right place at the right time according to his will. Rachel was also sorry for being jealous of her best friend. After she finished praying, Rachel realized that she was supposed to be working, so she set off to do so. But she will always remember this story.

Jezy's Music Video Review

Jezy's Music Video Review:
"Must Have Done Something Right" Relient K

The video starts out with the lead singer (Matt) standing with his girlfriend singing the song. The girlfriend is kicking a soccer ball, and then she punts it far away and wants Matt to go get it. But then a food-stand guy catches it and keeps it away from him. He then kicks it to another guy in a coffee shop and then this guy also tries to keep it a way from Matt. Then he kicks it to another guy...ect. Most of the music video goes on like this but it gets a little more interesting and funny as the soccer ball gets kicked to a library, bowling alley, hotel, and the last place is around some dumpsters and where Matt finally gets the ball back and kicks it past a constuction worker and between the dumpsters as if he were really playing soccer. This video is fun and entertaining so i give it...
four out of five stars.
